Patient

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit will start with a discussion of your dental and medical history, including any symptoms like gum inflammation or sensitivity. A thorough clinical examination follows, where Dr. Larissa Ong will assess your gums and bone structure using tools like a periodontal probe and X-rays to measure gum pocket depth and detect signs of periodontal disease. Based on these findings, the Periodontist will diagnose your gum health and discuss treatment options.

During this appointment, the Periodontist will outline a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, which may include non-surgical procedures such as deep cleaning (scaling and root debridement) or surgical interventions like pocket reduction surgery for advanced cases. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your treatment plan and gum health. Future appointments will be scheduled as needed to begin treatment and monitor progress toward restoring and maintaining healthy gums.

Why do I need to see a Periodontist?

You should consider seeing a Periodontist if you experience any of the following signs or conditions related to your gum health:

  • Gum Inflammation: Redness, swelling, or tenderness in your gums, especially if accompanied by bleeding during brushing or flossing.
  • Gum Recession: Noticeable shrinkage of the gum line, exposing more of the tooth surface or causing sensitivity.
  • Persistent Bad Breath: Chronic halitosis that does not improve with oral hygiene practices may indicate underlying gum disease.
  • Loose Teeth: Teeth that feel loose or change position could be a sign of severe gum disease affecting the supporting bone.
  • Gum Pockets: Deepening spaces or pockets between your teeth and gums may indicate gum disease.
  • Previous Gum Treatment: If you have had previous gum treatments or surgeries and need ongoing maintenance and evaluation.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes or a family history of gum disease may increase your risk and warrant regular periodontal evaluations.

Consulting with a Periodontist allows for early detection and treatment of gum disease, which can help preserve your natural teeth and maintain optimal oral health.

Services

We specialise in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and the placement of dental implants. We work closely with your general dentist and other specialists to ensure comprehensive oral health care tailored to your unique needs.

Services
  1. Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy: Non-surgical treatments, such as scaling and root debridement (deep cleaning), are performed to remove plaque and calculus from below the gum line. This procedure aims to eliminate bacteria and toxins causing inflammation and infection in periodontal pockets. By ensuring smooth root surfaces, the treatment encourages the gums to reattach to the teeth and promotes healing of the periodontal tissues.
  2. Periodontal Surgery: Periodontal surgery may be necessary for more advanced cases of gum disease where non-surgical methods alone are insufficient. Procedures such as pocket reduction surgery are performed to access deeper periodontal pockets, remove diseased tissue, and facilitate periodontal regeneration where possible. This surgery helps eliminate bacteria and facilitates better oral hygiene practices to maintain gum health.
  3. Gum Graft Surgery: Gum graft surgery may be used in the management of receding or thin gums. During this procedure, tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth or a donor source and grafted onto the areas of recession to promote the stability and health of the gum tissues surrounding the teeth.
  4. Dental Implant Placement: Dental implants are a durable solution for replacing missing teeth. Periodontists are trained in the surgical placement of dental implants, which involves carefully inserting titanium posts into the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. Bone grafting procedures may be performed to ensure there is adequate bone volume to support the implant.
  5. Guided Tissue Regeneration: Guided tissue regeneration is a surgical technique used to regenerate lost bone and gum tissue caused by periodontal disease. This procedure involves placing biocompatible membranes and bone graft materials into the affected areas to encourage the growth of new bone and tissue. Guided tissue regeneration helps restore the natural contours of the gums and bone, improving both function and aesthetics.
  6. Maintenance Therapy: Periodontal maintenance therapy involves regular follow-up visits with the Periodontist to monitor gum health and reduce the recurrence of periodontal disease. During maintenance appointments, plaque and calculus are removed from above and below the gum line, and the effectiveness of home oral hygiene practices is assessed. Periodontists emphasise the importance of ongoing maintenance to preserve gum and bone health and maintain the longevity of teeth.
